چکیده

Retrieval of eco-hydrological variables/parameters from the orld’s cold and arid regions using remote sensing is more chalenging compared to other regions, and less research work on uantitative remote sensing has been carried out in these specific egions. This is because: (1) Cold and arid regions are most likely o be located in theworld’s remote and relatively under-developed reas, where conventional in situ observations aremore scarce and oredifficult tobe carriedout so that thevalidationof remote sensng is more difficult. (2) Terrain in cold and arid regions is usually ore complex and landscape is more fragmented and heterogeeous. The special issue aims to address these challenges. The papers appeared in this special issue use two regions as the ase study areas. Both of them are located inwest China, where one f most diverse and fragile environments exists in the world, with he Qinghai-Tibetan plateau elevated in the south and high mounains, plateaus, deserts, and oases interspersed in the north. The rst case study area is the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP), the soalled world’s third pole. QTP is a cold area, where the cryosphere ominates the natural environment and changes rapidly in recent ears. Another case study area is the Heihe river basin, the secnd largest and a very typical inland river basin (endorheic basin) n northwest China, where mountain cryosphere and the world’s riest area coexist. Environmental change in China’s inland river asins is controlled by water resource availability, which is further nfluenced by both climate change and human activities such as arming and grazing.

A multiscale dataset for understanding complex eco-hydrological processes in a heterogeneous oasis system

We introduce a multiscale dataset obtained from Heihe Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research (HiWATER) in an oasis-desert area in 2012. Upscaling of eco-hydrological processes on a heterogeneous surface is a grand challenge. Progress in this field is hindered by the poor availability of multiscale observations. HiWATER is an experiment designed to address this challenge through instru...

واسنجی و تحلیل عدم‌قطعیت یک مدل نیمه‌توزیعی در یک منطقه ‌نیمه‌خشک

Application of conceptual hydrological models is an important issue in watersheds for researchers, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. The hydrological behaviors are complicated in such watersheds and their calibration is more difficult. In this article, the conceptual and semi-distributed SWAT model is used for a semi-arid Nishabour watershed with 9350 km2 area. Streamflow simulation is ...

Runoff Simulation in the Upper Reaches of Heihe River Basin Based on the RIEMS–SWAT Model

In the distributed hydrological simulations for complex mountain areas, large amounts of meteorological input parameters with high spatial and temporal resolutions are necessary. However, the extreme scarcity and uneven distribution of the traditional meteorological observation stations in cold and arid regions of Northwest China makes it very difficult in meeting the requirements of hydrologic...

Long-Term (1969-2013) Changes of Water Parameters in Neka and Tajan Rivers, Mazandaran, Iran

Background: Iran is located in the global arid zone. With an average rainfall of less than 250 mm. 25 percent is Iran of located in hyper-dry area and 40 percent in the arid area. In 2007, the World Bank report declared the annual reduction of freshwater resources in Iran 6 times more than global standards and indicators. Since at present, in Iran most available fresh water enters the water eco...
